The governing board of the renowned performing arts venue has decided to be renamed the Trump-Kennedy Center, per an announcement by the White House.

Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated on social media that the board's approval was consensus, attributing it to "the unbelievable work President Trump has done over the last year in rescuing the building."

"This will be a truly great team long into the future! The building will no doubt reach new levels of success and grandeur," Leavitt continued.

The planned renaming is expected to be deeply divisive, particularly in Washington, D.C., where the center has been an iconic landmark since its completion and christening for President John F. Kennedy.

Not long after assuming the presidency, President Donald Trump replaced all the center's existing board members and appointed loyalists in their place. The reconstituted board later moved to elect Trump chairman.

The president helped procure approximately $257 million in congressional funding to pay for major renovations and associated costs at the aging venue.
