Stephen Ireland started playing for the side during pre-season this season through good friend and current Wythenshawe player Blake Norton, and the ex- Republic of Ireland player then invited additional former professionals, who all compete in a weekly small-sided match, to join in.

Former Senegal striker Niasse, who scored twelve scores in 65 top-flight matches for Everton and still attends their matches at Goodison Park, also had his first appearance versus Collegiate OB - who are based in the city and use an Everton training kit as their strip.

"My mate Stephen Ireland told me 'come and play, it's a laugh'," commented the striker.

"After that he told me we were facing a side from the city and the surprise I had when I saw them wearing Blue shirts - I say this is wrong for me!

"If you still enjoy the game and you feel you can still play, wherever you can play, what are you going to do?

"Those people who turn up and see are happy and to give someone's day if they watch us playing there and to ask us queries - it's really about the pleasure of us getting a place we can play, with structure of course."

So great is the strength in depth at the club, he had his debut at defender.

"That's a little unusual but then, I enjoy running and just move forward - I'm not staying back that much," he added.

"I tell my defender 'I'm not hanging back' and that I'm just going to keep running.

"The movement is what I'm after. It's good fun."

In addition to Cisse's 6 goals on his first game, Ireland has scored eight in three games for Wythenshawe, while George Boyd scored five on his debut appearance and Lescott, a centre-half by trade, scored a triple in one game up front.

Paul Barrow, 38, who plays on the flank for the opposition, faced former Wigan defender Figueroa on the weekend - and had to explain his young boy who Emile Heskey was.

Figueroa has played at two global tournaments for Honduras, in as well as featuring in over 200 Premier League games.

"It was going round like a rumor they had all these former top-flight players," remarked the player.

"I felt I was a bit awestruck facing Figueroa to be honest.

"Also Emile [Heskey] got on and he's has over 60 English appearances.

"Our side competed well for a solid twenty minutes but then we had a player sent off and it was hard.

"Our group really have not ceased talking about it - I was calling my mother and sibling on the journey home.

"The opponents were all really nice, shaking our hands after the match - it was like playing a group of normal fellas.

"Now we are eager for the second match."
