The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and Europe.
