"Any idea when you're interviewing the Haim sisters?" a message reads. "My request was to ask if I can be their newest bandmate."
However, there remains one problem: I also desires to be the Haims' fourth member. What's more, we are not alone. Several celebrated supporters have also begged for the role.
It's clear something is happening. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana began their path playing gigs at neighborhood delis with their family. Today, they are multi-time Grammy Award nominees.
In the tradition of the most iconic ensembles, they're a tight-knit trio. Their music videos frequently depict them walking in harmony down the streets of Los Angeles. During performances, they play with such pure happiness you can't help but think, "I want to be involved in that, too."
"The numerous instances on tour that audience members came up to us and said, 'Watching you live, I picked up a guitar'," remarks Alana, the most junior of the trio. "It is the greatest compliment. That's an award in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can inspire people to form a group."
"And thus everyone are welcome to be the fourth member of Haim."
The trio are connecting from a break, where they're resting up after an lengthy tour in for their new album, I Quit.
They're currently processing the news it's been nominated for best rock album at the Grammys – with Haim the first all-woman band ever in the running for the award.
"I tune into the nominations every year, so it almost feels like The Truman Show when your name is called," says Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this correctly or am I dreaming'?"
The significance of the accolade isn't lost on the band.
"We really set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a significant step," adds Alana. "But we're just thankful for the women that came before us."
The project was born from a period of transition. All three sisters were single, and the music explores that odd liminal space where you're happy to be free, but not quite ready to start anew.
The themes track endings and farewells. The sisters seek love, but not the relationships they've got. You can hear them determining in real time who they want to be.
"That's a perfect way of putting it, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is like a mantra. You have to consciously practice shutting out the outside opinions and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."
That recent confidence called for a new sound – more organic and powerful than anything the band had done before.
For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that was founded on the drum sound.
"The drum sound is such a nuanced thing, and I care so much about it," she says.
"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our memoir," laughs Alana. "I always say, our albums cannot begin until we find the ideal drum sound."
The trio's openness fueled the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters shared some of their personal horror stories.
One man broke up with Este over a health consideration. Alana shared a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.
"Experiencing these setbacks, you just feel like there's only darkness," explains Alana. "Thus to be able to find humor in those stories and have them tell you wilder stories, it's therapeutic."
It's not difficult sense a shift in the band. Now, Haim are more confident of their position in the rock pantheon.
They're top-billed acts, with hit albums and an global fan base.
But Haim will forever be their number one focus.
"Me and my siblings have been playing music since I was four," shares Alana. "It feels as if nothing else that we were destined for. And I'm really fortunate we've gotten here and we're still kicking."
